The Bristol International Balloon Fiesta is a vibrant, free-to-attend three-day celebration of Bristol’s deep-rooted connection to the magical world of hot air ballooning. From Friday 8th to Sunday 10th August, the rolling hills of Ashton Court transform into a temporary playground of colour, culture, and community.

This iconic event has been a fixture of the UK’s event calendar for over four decades. With Bristol recognised as the birthplace of ballooning in Europe—and now the global capital of the sport—it’s only fitting that the city plays host to the largest annual ballooning event in Europe.

What began in 1979 as the vision of a small group of friends has since grown into a beloved Bristol institution. Today, the Fiesta is an internationally recognised symbol of the region, attracting over 100 hot air balloons and thousands of visitors each year.

Mass Balloon Ascents

Twice daily—at dawn (approx. 6am) and dusk (approx. 6pm)—the arena becomes a sea of colour during the spectacular mass ascents. With over 100 balloons scheduled to launch, visitors can experience the calm beauty of morning flights or the golden drama of evening ascents, all weather permitting. The question always remains: will they fly?

Daytime Entertainment

Even when the balloons are grounded, the fiesta buzzes with life. Explore a packed programme of entertainment, featuring live performances, local traders, food and drink stalls, interactive exhibits, and family-friendly activities.

Night Glows

On Friday and Saturday nights, stay after sunset for the event’s signature Night Glows. As darkness falls, dozens of tethered balloons inflate and light up the night sky in a choreographed dance of fire and music. With a stunning soundtrack provided by BBC Radio Bristol, it's an unforgettable experience that lifts spirits as high as the balloons themselves.
